As we learn more and varied compositions, our insight of music and perception keeps getting better. Thiagaraja’s grand Ghana raga pancharatna is a must for all music students. Here we learn the last one in sree raga. The unique feature of this composition is that it starts on the second count of the thala. Here also the student is able to understand and appreciate the nuances of the raga and also improve his creativity in singing the same. Gowlipanthu , a rare raga is taught through a composition of Thiagaraja. Shuddha dhanyasi raga is dealt with in further detail through detailed alapana singing and complex swara patterns in the Dikshitar song.

Objectives

One of the objectives of the course is to have students get acquainted with compositions of great composers such as Bhadrachala Ramdas,Sadshiva brahmendra, Muthiah Bhagavatar,  Maharaja Sawthi thirunal, Ambuja krishana along with the Trinity composers. The course also aims at introducing and training students to sing proficiently in rare ragams such as Yadukulakambothi, Simhavahini, Vijayashri, Gowlipanthu and many more. The 3 compositions chosen in this course CV307 are ones in which student learns a kriti in ragas Gowlipanthu,Sree and Shuddhadhanyasi in each and ragam,niraval, kalpana swara to both these ragas. 

Learning Objectives

After the completition of CV307 the student should be able to

Sing the  intricacies of a Ghana raga like Sree and the complete ratna with swara and sahitya with perfection

Understand , appreciate and sing a rare raga composition like Teratheeyaga

Sing raga alapana, niraval and swarams for audava – audava ragas like shuddha dhanyasi.

Those who have completed the CV306 from the Academy. Those who have trained in Carnatic music for at least 6.5 years and a strong foundation of Varnams, Kritis and singing kalpana swaras and alapanas.
